NCES Battles Childhood Obesity Through Education, Knowledge

Company Releases New Kid Connection Nutrition Lesson Plans

Olathe, Kan. (February 11, 2008) -- NCES, an industry leader in nutrition education, recently released its newest product, The Kid Connection, an all-inclusive teaching tool and lesson plans designed for educators to help children battle and prevent childhood obesity and develop positive, life-long wellness habits.

The Kid Connection, created by NCES dietitians and nutrition educators, helps teachers guide students in making the connection between healthy eating, physical activity and a healthier body. According to NCES President, Chris Jackson, “We’re very excited to release our most comprehensive classroom tool yet – complete with the most up-to-date information on the MyPyramid, food guidelines and the importance of staying active.”

With childhood obesity becoming one of the leading health risks in our nation, NCES believes an educated child is a healthy child. Today, more than 11 million children are overweight while an additional 13 million children are at risk, according to the American Heart Association. Overweight children don’t just suffer from social stigmatization and poor self image, they are at high risk for such ailments as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – both previously considered to be limited to adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Jackson added, “It is important to teach kids from a young age – both at home and at school – the positive impact healthy eating and an active lifestyle can have. We think the Kid Connection tool kit will help nutritionists and teachers make the connection with children in the classroom and other similar settings.”

The Kid Connection includes lesson plans, handouts, tear pads and activities, with a supporting CD ROM that comes equipped with additional materials for lessons and hands on activities to reinforce healthy behavior, so educators can use the program over and over again.

NCES Promotes Healthy Lifestyles for Baby-Boomers

Company Releases Today’s Healthy Lifestyles, First in Ongoing Series

Olathe, Kan. (April 8, 2008) -- NCES, an industry leader in nutrition education, introduces Today’s Healthy Lifestyles, a series of educational guides developed specifically for the baby-boomer generation to help fight age-related health problems with nutrition and exercise.

Created by NCES dietitians and nutrition educators, this two-part series is designed to provide adults with the tools and resources to make life beyond 50 active, vibrant and healthy. Nutrition and You includes MyPyramid guidelines established by the USDA. Exercise and You is adapted from current exercise recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association.

“The combination of proper nutrition and exercise is the best way to help slow-down the onset of age-related changes and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle,” says Chris Jackson, NCES president. “There is a tremendous shortage of quality nutrition education in this format specifically designed for the boomer market.”

Health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol and high blood pressure become more prevalent with age, according to leading health care experts, but baby-boomers can take preventative measures to reduce these health risks. With this in mind, NCES has added products for baby-boomers to its extensive collection of age-focused nutrition education products. Today’s Healthy Lifestyles focuses on what it takes to stay healthy for adults 50 and beyond.

“We all know that eating right and exercise is good for you, but different age groups require different kinds of nutrition and different levels of exercise. It is important to learn the difference so you can properly care for your body and your health,” said Jackson. Today’s Healthy Lifestyles helps readers identify foods in each food group, pinpoint the proper level of caloric intake, and to match their nutrition with their physical activity level. In addition, the series provides a way to categorize current exercise levels, with instructions and guidelines to help discover and reach proper fitness levels with positive and age-appropriate examples and messages.

NCES Battles Childhood Obesity Through Education, Active Participation

Company Releases New Kids Activity Booklets: Healthy Activities for Terrific Tots, Cool Kids

OLATHE, KAN. (August 7, 2008) -- NCES, an industry leader in nutrition education, recently released its newest product series, Kids Activity Booklets – age-specific coloring books designed to actively engage children in making healthy lifestyle decisions with proper nutrition and exercise.

Created by NCES dietitians and nutrition educators, these booklets help children make the connection between healthy eating, physical activity and a healthier body – with activities that make learning fun and interactive. Healthy Activities for Terrific Tots (ages 3-5) introduces children to the basic food groups and identifies healthy examples from each. Healthy Activities for Cool Kids (ages 6-10) guides the child in making healthy decisions and explains how these choices lead to a healthy lifestyle.

“It is important not just to educate children on proper nutrition and exercise, but to engage them in making these choices,” says Chris Jackson, NCES president. “Encouraging healthy habits at a young age helps give children the tools they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood.”

With the rise of childhood obesity rates in our nation, NCES believes it is important to start introducing healthy lifestyle practices during childhood. Today, more than 11 million children are overweight with an additional 13 million children at risk, according to the American Heart Association. Overweight children, besides being more prone to social denigration and low self image, are at high risk for such ailments as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – both previously considered to be limited to adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jackson added, “It is important for children to understand the positive impact healthy eating and an active lifestyle can have. We think the Kids Activity Booklets will help children feel engaged and excited to participate in healthy learning and living.”

Kids Activity Booklets include crossword puzzles, word searches, mazes, word jumbles, and other activities designed to reinforce healthy food choices and an active lifestyle, while the coloring book format allows children to bring their own artistic flair to each page. The variation of difficulty between Terrific Tots and Cool Kids accounts for differences in education levels, ensuring that the activities will keep children engaged and stimulated.

For Moms-to-be, Summertime Snacks Could Affect More than Just Your Waistline

NCES Releases New Edition of Gestational Diabetes and You

OLATHE, KAN. (April, 2009) -- NCES, an industry leader in nutrition education, recently released the newly updated Gestational Diabetes and You, an informational booklet designed to teach women diagnosed with gestational diabetes about their affliction, including steps expectant mothers can take to help ensure a healthy and successful pregnancy.

Created by NCES dietitians and nutrition educators, Gestational Diabetes and You outlines the effects of high blood sugar on the body during pregnancy, and how it can lead to gestational diabetes – a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy and often goes away after the birth, affecting 3-5 out of every 100 pregnant women. Readers will learn the effects of gestational diabetes on both the mother and child, and have access to worksheets designed to help plan healthy meals, maintain a regular exercise schedule, and track blood sugar levels.

“It’s so important, for pregnant women to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a combination of proper nutrition and exercise,” says Chris Jackson, NCES president.  “The abundance of food with high sugar content makes maintaining healthy blood sugar levels much more difficult, putting a strain on both the mother and child.”

High blood sugar in the mother can often lead to health complications for the child. Newborns are more likely to have low blood sugar levels and high insulin levels if the mother’s blood sugar levels were high, according to the American Diabetes Association. This can lead to a higher birth weight resulting in complications during childbirth, as well as a higher possibility of type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure later on in life.

“We all know that eating right and exercise is good for you – it’s important to remember that it is also a necessity for unborn children during the various stages of development. Good lifestyle habits practiced by the mother help newborns avoid unnecessary health risks and promote a healthy and safe pregnancy,” said Jackson.

Gestational Diabetes and You includes a sample blood sugar/insulin/exercise record, a food diary sheet, a simplified version of food portions based on the USDA MyPyramid food guidelines, sample meal plan sheet, a pregnancy weight gain curve, information about normal blood sugar levels, and how to keep these levels in a safe range for mother and baby. The booklet was created in an easy-to-read format, making the information easily accessible to all literacy levels and is available in both English and Spanish.
